Quick comparison

  • PNG: lossless and sharp. Larger files. Best for interfaces, text and anything you will annotate.
  • JPEG: small files, slight softening of text. Best for photo-heavy pages and email attachments.
  • WebP: smaller than PNG at similar quality. Best for web publishing and documentation sites.
  • PDF: multi-page, printable, opens everywhere. Best for long pages, reports and anything a client will print.

Recommendations

  • Bug reports and support tickets: PNG.
  • Client reviews and audits: PDF on A4 or Letter.
  • Slides: PNG at 2× size, or JPEG if the deck is getting large.
  • Help-center articles: WebP or PNG.
